Jesus advised, “When you are invited to a wedding feast, do not sit in the place of honor. Instead, take the lowest place at the table. Then, when your host sees you, he will come and say, “Friend, we have a better place for you.” Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests.
For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
This passage speaks to us about the personal ego and the great need we have to be recognized by others. It is important to receive congratulations for achievements; it feels great to be genuinely admired for a pleasant appearance or personality.
However, there is an insurmountable abyss between that and adopting an unhealthy behavior to stand out or be the center of attention. The personal ego constantly plays tricks on us, leading to damaging homes, leaving jobs, and dividing churches.
Let us work and serve others with humility. Life is not about winning fleeting applause. There is a greater satisfaction: having fulfilled duty, left a mark, and being exalted by the Lord with new and greater responsibilities.
