As He was nearing His farewell, Jesus told His disciples that they would be sifted like wheat. It was then that Peter declared, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, not only to prison, but also to death.”
Peter was very confident in his convictions and believed he would never fail the Savior—much like we are when we are in times of peace and not under pressure.
But Jesus, who knows our weaknesses, said to him, “Peter, I tell you, the rooster will not crow today before you deny three times that you know me.”
And indeed, that’s exactly what happened: when the Lord was arrested, Peter denied knowing Him, lied, cursed, and ended up weeping bitterly.
However, Jesus could see much further ahead. He knew Peter would fall, but that he would also rise again, and despite it all, he would become even more useful in God’s kingdom.
“But I have prayed for you, Peter, that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned back to me, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:32).
Turning back in the Christian life is never advisable. But when it happens, it allows us to understand that the other side offers only an empty life, full of uncertainties.
Many have crossed that line and, like Peter, have returned, ready to give their time and life for the cause of Jesus.
