One of the virtues that Jesus has taught us is to have mercy on others. Mercy is feeling compassion for those who suffer and offering them help.
God is pleased with merciful men and women, those who act in private, simply to help, without expecting anything in return.
Jesus said it in these words: “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them; if you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.”
What He meant is that we should help others out of love, in a discreet manner. We don’t need to tell others about what we do. The greatest satisfaction is seeing the smiling face of the person we have helped in a moment of need.
Perhaps that person sought God to express their need, and we are the answer and the instrument that God will use to show them His great mercy.
Jesus concluded by saying, “Let your help be in secret; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly.”
