Many people say that we are all children of God. This phrase is not accurate. What is true is that we are all creations of God, as we have been created in His image and likeness.
So, how do I become a child of God? And what is the distinguishing element of having God as a Father?
Jesus affirmed, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.”
An essential characteristic of someone who has God not only as Creator but as Father is that they love and honor His Son.
Jesus was sent by God to establish a new relationship with His creation: “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).
The Lord also indicated, “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever” (John 14:15-16).
So, everyone who accepts Christ as their Lord and Savior receives the Holy Spirit, keeps His commandments, and goes from being a creation to becoming a child of God.
