Is your world only your home? Do you think there is no other responsibility than that?
Jesus was walking when he saw a person and said to him, “Come, follow me.” The man agreed but replied, “Lord, let me first go back home and bury my father.”
Jesus said to him, “Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead. Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.”
In the case of this man, it wasn’t that his father had passed away. It was a polite way of saying, “I better wait and stay with my father in his final years, and then I will meet you wherever you are.”
The excuse seems undeniable: Doesn’t God want us to take care of our vulnerable family members? The answer is yes.
Jesus’ invitation still involves embracing the message of the cross, preaching the Kingdom of God, and providing material and emotional support to our families. A perfect balance of truth, good testimony, and our responsibility to this world.
