Jesus, speaking to his disciples, said to them: “You have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.”
But I say to you, “Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.”
Jesus was in the midst of a society very similar to ours, where words no longer held much weight. Lies, flattery, and unfulfilled commitments were deeply rooted in society.
That’s why, when people truly wanted to speak the truth, they would swear by valuable things.
Jesus corrected this bad habit by saying: “Let what you say be simply “Yes” or “No”; anything more than this comes from evil.”
Make your commitments before God, be responsible with your agreements, become a trustworthy person by your words, respect agreed-upon deadlines. The result will be that you’ll have more work, people will seek you out for your effectiveness and seriousness. Be a reliable person in a world of falsehood.

VERSE OF THE DAY:
“All you need to say is simply “Yes” or “No”; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”
— Matthew 5:37
